Dolpo is Nepal's last forbidden kingdom — a high-altitude plateau district on the Tibetan border that was closed to foreigners until 1989 and remains the most isolated inhabited region in the country. The Lower Dolpo Trek covers the two defining highlights of the region: Phoksundo Lake and the Bon Buddhist village of Dho Tarap, connected by a route that crosses two passes above 5,000 metres and traverses terrain that has remained essentially unchanged since the 14th century. Phoksundo Lake, at 3,611 metres, is Nepal's deepest lake — a 10-kilometre-long body of turquoise water in a limestone canyon that glows with an otherworldly intensity in the afternoon light. The lake's colour, created by the dissolved minerals of the surrounding karst geology, shifts between deep cobalt and vivid emerald through the day, and the cliffs that rise directly from its southern shore are hung with ancient monastery frescoes that have been fading for centuries. Dho Tarap, at 3,944 metres, is the world's largest Bon Buddhist community — the practitioners of the pre-Buddhist religion of Tibet that predates Tibetan Buddhism by thousands of years. The village's monastery is the spiritual centre of the Bon world, and a rest day here allows deep engagement with a living religious tradition that exists nowhere else in this form. The full Lower Dolpo circuit crosses both the Numa La (5,190m) and Baga La (5,070m) passes — serious high-altitude crossings that require fitness and good weather. All logistics are camping-based; the restricted area permit covers the Dolpo region, and the Shey Phoksundo National Park permit is also required. This is Peter Matthiessen's Nepal — the 'Snow Leopard' country that inspired one of the great books of the 20th century.

Nepal's most culturally unique trek for serious adventurers and literary travellers. Dolpo is the setting of 'The Snow Leopard' and 'Himalaya' (Caravan). The Bon Buddhist culture found nowhere else, Phoksundo's surreal beauty, and the utter remoteness create an experience unlike any other trek in Nepal.
“I'd never done anything like this before and honestly questioned whether I could handle it...”
“Every doubt vanished on the trail. The landscapes, the people, the achievement — absolutely life-changing.”
April-May offers stable weather and clear passes. The Dolpo plateau is warming. Phoksundo Lake is at its most vivid turquoise.
October-November delivers clear skies but cold nights at altitude. The Numa La and Baga La passes may have early snow. The Dolpo-pa people are preparing for winter — culturally fascinating.
Hard trek requiring strong endurance. Two passes above 5,000m demand fitness and altitude comfort, though maximum sleeping altitude is moderate (4,520m). The remoteness means 18 days of walking with no rest-day bailout options. Prior multi-week camping trek experience essential.
