What if the weather is cloudy and I can't see the mountains?

Mountain visibility depends on weather, which we cannot control. October through December offers the highest probability of clear skies (roughly 80%). We check conditions the evening before and will advise if postponement is recommended. No refund for weather, but we can reschedule for the next available morning at no extra charge.

How difficult is the hike to Dhulikhel?

The 12 km trail is mostly downhill (descending from 2,175 m to 1,550 m) through farmland and villages. The path is well-trodden but unpaved in sections. Anyone who walks regularly can handle it. Sturdy shoes with grip are recommended — not sandals.

Warm layers for the pre-dawn viewpoint (it can be 5-10°C at 2,175 m), comfortable hiking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and a camera with a charged battery. We provide breakfast and water. A small daypack is useful.

Your driver picks you up from your Kathmandu hotel at 4:30 AM and heads east through quiet streets toward the rim of the valley. The 32-kilometer drive to Nagarkot takes about 90 minutes, climbing steadily through Bhaktapur district and pine forest. Arrive at the Nagarkot viewpoint tower before first light, with hot tea provided while you wait in the crisp mountain air at 2,175 meters. As the eastern horizon shifts from deep indigo to amber, the snow peaks begin to glow: first Everest (8,849 m) and its neighbor Lhotse, then Makalu, Cho Oyu, and the chain of summits marching westward through Langtang, Ganesh Himal, and all the way to Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. On a clear morning you can count over a dozen named peaks above 7,000 meters. Your guide identifies each summit and shares mountaineering history. Photograph the fiery alpenglow in every direction, then enjoy a hot breakfast at a hilltop lodge. After breakfast, begin the scenic downhill hike toward Dhulikhel (approximately 12 km, 3-4 hours, mostly descending). The trail winds through rhododendron forest, terraced mustard and wheat fields glowing yellow-green, and small Tamang and Newar villages where children wave from schoolyard fences. Stop at a farmhouse for tea and a chat with locals. Arrive in Dhulikhel by midday, explore its medieval Newari architecture and Kali Temple, and board your vehicle for the 90-minute drive back to Kathmandu, arriving by 2:00 PM.
