If you want the raw magic of the Himalayas without the crowds, Mardi Himal is your trek. Only opened to trekkers in 2012, this hidden ridge route climbs through pristine rhododendron forest and emerges onto an exposed ridgeline where Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) stands so close you can hear the ice cracking on its face. In just seven days, you ascend from the lush lowlands near Pokhara to the Upper Viewpoint at 4,500m, where the entire Annapurna Sanctuary amphitheatre unfolds before you at eye level — a perspective that even the famous ABC trek cannot match. The trail is blissfully quiet; you may trek for hours without seeing another group, camping in simple teahouses surrounded by alpine wildflowers and the calls of Himalayan monals. The route suits moderately fit trekkers seeking a shorter alternative to Annapurna Base Camp that sacrifices nothing in mountain drama. Spring brings the rhododendron forest alive in crimson and pink, while autumn offers crystalline visibility and golden grasslands on the upper ridge. For those with limited time but unlimited ambition, Mardi Himal delivers a concentrated dose of everything that makes Nepal trekking unforgettable.

Ideal for adventurous trekkers with limited time who want crowd-free ridgeline views of Machhapuchhre. Spring transforms the lower forest into a crimson rhododendron corridor, autumn offers crystalline visibility from the 4,500m Upper Viewpoint, and seven days from Pokhara makes it the best short alternative to ABC.
“I'd never trekked at altitude before and was nervous about the steep trails...”
“Watching sunrise over the Annapurna range from base camp was the most magical moment of my life.”
The lower forest trail transforms into a crimson rhododendron corridor from late March through April. Fewer trekkers than ABC means you often have the ridgeline viewpoints to yourself.
October-November offers crystalline visibility from the 4,500m Upper Viewpoint — Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli in an unbroken panorama. Cool, dry conditions make the steep sections more comfortable.
The ridgeline sections above 3,500m are steep and exposed — good balance and comfort on narrow trails matters as much as fitness. If you've done a challenging day hike before, you can handle Mardi Himal.
